December 13 - December 21 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Surfing and Searching: Internet Research in School

Because this is a shorter chapter, we will devote less time to discussion and move onto the next chapter in a week.

What experiences have you had with your classes when using technology as a means to access and manage information? Has the use of technology made your role as a teacher more difficult or has it just changed it?

I was surprised to learn that even images collected on the internet must be cited when we use them in our published work. What kind of discussions have you had with your students regarding the topic of plagiarism and resource citing when using information gleaned from the Internet?

  1. I really like the section about the second grade class becoming experts in a particular kind of weather. It gave me a better idea of how to manage research with primary aged children.
When we were studying geography this fall, my student teacher did some really cool stuff with google earth that I didn't even know was possible! She tagged a bunch of locations and saved them to show the children later. That was a great way to make technology more manageable. This year I also made a podcast with one of my reading groups. It was so fun and the kids seemed motivated to work harder because they knew what the outcome would be.

  2. Melissa, I love your examples of ways to use technology with the younger students. I want to learn more about teh Google Earth search project that your student teacher did.

  3. Despite many minor hiccups in using technology in the classroom, I am a firm believer that it can be a wonderful learning tool. I teach two very disparate groups of learners, and they all seem to be engaged when we add technology in the form of Comic Life, keyboarding, watching videos to help understand content, and even researching. They are also very forgiving of the quirks of computers and the learning curve faced by their teacher! Recently when we were working on inquiry circle projects, I realized that my plan to teach them how to make power points in the spring might need to be adjusted as I have students who can make more elaborate power points than I ever have. What a great thing to discover!
